Dear Propel East Family,
My name is Ashley Frailey and I am thrilled to be your child’s English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher! I am very excited about all of the fun learning opportunities planned for the 2017-2018 school year. First, I would like to tell you little about myself. I was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, but raised in Liverpool, New York where I graduated from High School. After graduation, I moved with my family to Pittsburgh. It did not take long to become a die-hard Steelers' fan. I also enjoys watching the Pirates play baseball. I attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) where I graduated with a dual major in Special Education (N-12) and Regular Education (K-6). My husband and I moved to North Carolina in January of 2010 to begin my teaching career at J.T. Barber Elementary. During my seven years there, I was a Special Education and 5th grade teacher before settling in to 3rd grade for four years. I moved back to Pennsylvania when my husband was offered a job as the Photographer for California University of Pennsylvania. I am is very excited to be teaching 5th grade English Language Arts (ELA) and Social Studies at Propel East this school year!
In Language Arts, your student will be required to read and comprehend a variety of genres under the categories of Fiction and Nonfiction including: Fables, Biographies, and Poetry to name just a few. Some areas of focus include: determining the meaning of unknown words, understanding point of views, comparing and contrasting themes, evaluating characters within the story, and determining main idea and key details. Also, I am a firm believer in writing every day, in all subjects. Your student’s notebooks will be used frequently throughout the day. If you are able to, please send one composition notebook in with your student (instead of the spiral notebooks commonly used). It is my experience that the spiral notebooks do not hold up as well and it is important that these journals remain intact throughout the year as a tool to reflect on our learning.
Additionally, I will be working with your student in whole-group, small group, and in one-on-one settings, as needed, based on your student’s needs. During our “Data Driven Instructional” (DDI) time, we will conduct Guided Reading centers to strengthen your student’s reading, writing, speaking, listening, and comprehension skills.
Social Studies will be integrated into Language Arts as much as possible. In Social Studies, your student will be studying: History, Geography and Environment, Economics, and Civics and Government. I hope your student is as excited about Science and Social Studies as I am!
Please visit my website: http://mrsfrailey.weebly.com/ frequently. I will post a monthly newsletter in order to continually update you on classroom expectations and areas of study for that month. You can also contact me through my website as well. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] or (412)823-0347, if you need anything. I look forward to getting to know you better. This is going to be a great school year!
Sincerely,
Ashley Frailey
